How
Do I Know If I Am Codependent?
In order to achieve a successful recovery, it is essential that an addict have a strong support system. However, there are often people in the addict’s life that would rather overlook or ignore problems rather than risk upsetting the addict or losing the relationship. These people are called codependents. Are you one?
Symptoms of Codependency
- Do you ignore addictive behavior in order to keep the peace?
- Do you feel that you are somehow responsible for the addiction?
- Do you believe you are capable of saving the addict in your life with love, caring, and understanding?
- Do you tolerate mental, emotional or even physical abuse out of fear of losing your relationship with the addict?
- Do you experience a high level of anxiety?
- Do you avoid or ignore your feelings rather than admitting there is a problem?
- Have you withdrawn from everyone in your life besides the addict?
- Do you fear being alone?
- Do you avoid asserting yourself when you have a need?
- Has stress made you physically ill?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you need to find help. You won’t be able to effectively help the addict in your life, or be able to enjoy a healthy and productive relationship until you address the underlying causes of your codependency.
